The future development of balneology and SPA tourism in Bulgaria was discussed at a meeting between the Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism and the chairman at ‘’International politics and European projects’ in the European SPA Association.
The topic of all discussions was the ongoing procedure for the development of standards in balneology, SPA and wellness tourism which will be included in the new tourism Law. Bulgaria boasts more than 600 mineral springs in 240 sources and even Romans and Thracians were attracted by the healthy climate, fertile lands and curative mineral waters. Therefore, Bulgaria is an essential destination in European SPA map and new Tourism Law gives a light to the standards in terms of the quality of SPA services. EU has recently revealed that SPA and wellness are the most rapidly developing tourism sectors. SPA tourism is concentrated on the health issues and fortunately Bulgaria has all possibilities to offer SPA services. It has recently become clear that ESPA is working on attracting more tourists from Scandinavian countries. Hence, they would come in Bulgaria to benefit from SPA services which are of high quality. Let us remind that European parliament is currently working on a directive that will allow EU residents to use SPA and balneology services in every country which is a member of EU. Since SPA services are associated with health tourism, this means that some expenses will be payable under the respective social policy.
