Comment: My girlfriend and I stayed at the Duchess for one night and we weren' t that impressed. Check-in was fine, room ok but clean. Shower was tiny and as a result the bathroom floor would get wet easily and there wasn't a lot of toilet paper. It's about 25-30 minute walk into the centre of Varna or 7 BGN by cab - on the way to the hotel, cabbie didn't seem to know where it was but maybe that was just him. The main downer though was the breakfast - no fresh juice (just orange cordial with soda water mixed in), not much choice but no coffee or tea on the breakfast sideboard and we weren't offered any either by the staff - disappointed!

Comment: Just in a few words:
Just do not hesitate and make the reservation. I´m 46 years old from Sweden and I promise you that you wouldn´t regret it!
Extremely nice, clean, modern but with a personal, familiar touch, cheap, very friendly stuff, all of them starting with the owner and his son and all other working in the reception, bar, etc. English speaking. Internet, bar, nice place outside. Good and quick answers by e-mail. Good location close to the see and 5 min by taxi to the "deep center" of Varna.

Comment: Proprietor Valeri Milanov emailed me to ask if I knew what cycling in Bulgaria was like with potholes and poor street lighting.
I confirmed that I had done it many times before but was not keen on cycling from the airport in the evening. For 30 euros he sent his son to the airport in the airport shuttle which was good value. My room was comfortable with a good air conditioner and television. Not all staff spoke English but all were very friendly.
The Villa does a good breakfast and serves drinks all day.
Within walking distance are several excellent restaurants.
After two and a half weeks of enjoyable cycling I was pleased to return to the Villa Duchess where my room cost 30 euros per night and they were pleased to accept euros or levs.
My return flight was at an awkward hour so Mr Milanov's son drove me with bike and luggage back to Varna Airport.

Comment: The Duchess is a very quaint hotel with friendly staff and lovely, immaculately clean rooms.
The hotel is situated in the renowned park close to both the beach and the city centre.
The manager of the hotel is Valeri and he is an extremely friendly and obliging gentleman who can tell you anything you wish to know about Bulgaria. He can advise you on what attractions you should visit.
The manager put us into touch with a taxi driver who spent 5 days travelling criss-cross through Bulgaria showing us all the hot spots. It was quite an adventure and we were shown a great deal of the country.
